Allergy Injections
Your allergist may recommend allergen immunotherapy, known as “allergy shots”. It is recommended when you require continuous medications, or the quality of your life is poor in spite of the medications and preventive measures. It is also recommended if you have side effects to medications or are not able to take the medications needed to control your symptoms. Immunotherapy can be very effective in controlling allergic symptoms. It is actually a vaccination program to help build immunity against your allergies. Allergy injections are usually given at variable intervals over a period of three to five years. Immunotherapy (allergy injections) reduces the intensity of the symptoms caused by allergen exposure. Improvement from immunotherapy will take several months to occur, but benefit may last a long time.
There are many ways of treating allergies, and each person’s treatment must be individualized based on the frequency, severity, and duration of symptoms and allergic sensitivity.
