Patch Test

Testing

A patch test is a skin test used to help determine whether your rash is caused by an allergic or irritant reaction. A patch test also helps identify exactly which substance (s) is causing your dermatitis so that you may avoid exposure to the source of your skin rash. Patches containing common allergens in TOPICAL SUBSTANCES (Standard Patch test) are placed on the back to determine whether or not you are allergic to any of these substances. Your doctor may ask you to bring additional “SUSPECTED” MATERIAL from your home for this testing as well. It is a test to diagnose “CONTACT DERMATITIS”. Your Allergist will provide you with information on the positive result to help you avoid contact with this substance. Alternatives if available will be suggested as well.
